The Most Ridiculous Thing I've Ever Heard

Bar owners around Wrigley Field today said they will not serve alcohol after the 7th inning of potential Cubs clinching playoff games. WTF? After being pressured by Chicago city leaders, bars owners agreed. What country do we live in again? This sounds like something you would see in a communist country. Who is the Mayor of Chicago, Stalin? What do they think people do in bars? Also the city announced that after the 7th inning restaurants can no longer serve food, churches can not ring their bells at the top of the hour, and all people not interested in the Cubs must be shot to death. Ridiculous.

Weekend Recap

Penn State beats #22 Illinois 38-24. Welcome to the party Derrick Williams. Williams, one of the top recruits a few years ago, had the best game of his career. Williams rushed, caught, and returned a kick off for a touchdown, earning him the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week. The game was the closest so far for the Lions, who better work on hanging onto the ball if they want to remain in the National Championship picture. Too many fumbles are going to get you sooner or later.

The baseball season is over and our Pirates finished 67-95, just 30.5 games out of first. GM Neil Huntington wasted no time in firing pitching coach Jeff Andrews and first-base coach Lou Frazier. You have to blame someone. Manager John Russell and the rest of his coaching staff will stay.

The MLB playoffs start Wednesday. It's the Dodgers-Cubs and Brewers-Phillies in the NL. The AL has the RedSox-Angels and the winner of the AL Central-Rays. It's a Rays-Phillies World Series.

and finally... Does everyone know that OCB has a taco bar? My life is now complete.

You know, your son looks like a fag to me

One quick post today before I sit in front of the TV for a few hours. Paul Newman died yesterday after a battle with cancer. The title of this post is from Slap Shot, the best sports movie ever! I think I'll rent it this weekend.

You're Welcome Milwaukee

There is nothing better these days than playing the Pirates. Do you want to snap a losing streak? Play the Pirates. Do you want to make your new manager look good cuz you just got the old manager fired? Play the Pirates. With a chance to play spoiler, which is the only thing left to play for, the Bucs get swept, again. There are only 3 games left and they are against the Padres, a team that is WORSE than Pittsburgh. Tonight Ian Snell (6-12, 5.54) goes for Pittsburgh and Josh Geer (2-1, 2.86) starts for San Diego. The game is not on TV, again.

Top ranked USC lost last night to Oregon State. Penn State beat Oregon State so that makes Penn State #1, right?

and finally...don't forget to wear white tomorrow.

My New Favorite Song This Week

Let's get a little funky with this weeks favorite song. Here is Little Bit Of Feel Good from Jamie Lidell

My Best David Fricke Impression

The Cold War Kids- Loyalty To Loyalty CD Review

Loyalty To Loyalty, the 2nd CD from The Cold War Kids comes off as boring and redundant. Lead singer Nathan Willett's constant whining becomes tiresome almost from the get go. There are no real keepers in this set, unlike their 1st CD Robbers & Cowards . Yes, they still have the heavy guitar riffs and cool piano chords, but Loyalty lacks in the songwriting, something Robbers was strong on. After a few songs, Willett's voice becomes more of a distraction than anything. I was a big fan of their debut, and maybe, just maybe, this will grow on me. Sophomore slump? I'm voting yes. GRADE C-

Stuff From The Sports World
Prince Fielder's 2 run walk off HR wins it for the Brewers last night. Tough loss for the Pirates and the six fans in Pittsburgh that still watch them. Tonight it's Paul Maholm (9-8, 3.68) for the Bucs, and CC Sabathia (15-10, 2.85) for Milwaukee. Maybe the Pirates can get a "real" hit tonight. Hang in there, the Pens will be taking over soon. The game is on FSN.

Speaking of the Penguins, Pittsburgh demoted 13 guys to the Baby Pens, most notably Ryan Stone, Kris Beech, and Jonathan Filewich. Beech just can't seem to stick in the NHL.

Plaxico Burress has been suspended for one game for violating team rules. Hmmm... if the Giants were 0-3, would this happen?

Jim Leyland says he will return to Detroit next year. Good, I would hate to see him bail on a team.

Matt Millen out as Lions President and CEO, the city of Detroit riots in celebration.

and finally... enjoy the golf!

Pirates @ Brewers Tonight @ 8

I'm torn. My hatred for the Mets has me rooting for the Brewers to win the NL Wild Card. I just can't root against the Bucs here. Sorry, I'm loyal. Milwaukee is a game back in the Wild Card race. The Mets are hosting Chicago. Go Cubs! (there's something I have never said before) Tonight it's Jeff Karstens (2-6, 4.37) for our Buccos and Dave Bush (9-10, 4.22) for the Brewers. The game is on FSN

Also, Penn State's marijuana connoisseurs Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma returned to practice. Joe Pa is still mum on how much, if any, playing time they will see.

Weekend Recap

Well, the summer is over and the high heating bills are just a few weeks away. Here are some links to get you through your Monday...

Pedro Alvarez is a Pirate, pending MLB resolution (Post Gazette)

Penn State climbs to #12 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll (USA TODAY)

Lane Kiffin out in Oakland? (Oakland Tribune)

Vanderbilt is ranked for the first time since 1984 (VuCommodores.com)

Sergei Gonchar hurt, return unknown (Tribune-Review)

The Pirates close PNC Park for the year with another loss. Is this the end of the Jack Wilson era in the Burgh? (The Green Weenie)

Is anyone watching the WNBA playoffs?

and finally... I am a Jack Wilson fan. With that being said, I think it is time for him to move on. It's time to take a look at Bixler, and some of the other guys in the minors. The Bucs have already cleaned house and gotten younger. I was always surprised when Wilson didn't get traded but with his high salary, and .250 batting average, the market just wasn't there for him. Every team can use a slick fielder like Wilson, but don't expect to see him make $6.65 million next season. If Wilson does not come back next year, Adam LaRoche will be the highest paid Bucco. Ouch

I'm Glad I Don't Make Ashtrays For A Living

Tonight I stopped by the local watering hole for a tray of pizza (yes, we call it a tray around here, get over it). I've been to this bar a few times for take out and it was always a few old guys talking sports and politics, just like every corner bar. The bar was always a cloud of smoke, but without them, the bar would be empty. So I thought. Tonight it was crowded, with like young people. The reason... NO SMOKING! Man... I hope they start delivering soon

Blood Bath IV

After a sluggish start, Penn State cruises again beating Temple 45-3. The Owls lost their QB Adam DiMichele early to a shoulder injury, and Temple never had a chance. Daryll Clark threw two TD passes and ran for another, and Stephfon Green had a huge 69 yard TD run. The Lions out rushed Temple 303 to 16 and the Defense played an all around solid game. Next week is a White Out vs Illinois

4 Friggin' Hits?

The Pirates lost to the Astros tonight 5-1. The Bucs had a whopping 4 hits. Adam LaRoche had two of them, including his 23rd home run. Yippee! FSN is taking the weekend off and will not televise the rest of the series.

My New Favorite Song This Week

This weeks favorite song comes from The Blakes. The song is called Two Times. The only thing I could find was a live video, but I think it's better than the studio version anyway. Enjoy!

It's A Yankees Day In NEPA

The title of this post just made me throw up a little. The Scrankees lost last night 4-1 to the River Cats. They will just have to settle as International League Champions. That was the goal anyway. The team arrived at PNC Field this afternoon to show off the Governors Cup to a few hundred of their fans. Being a Pirates fan, nothing pissed me off more than the Yankees bringing their AAA team to my hometown and changing the name of the stadium to PNC Field. Northeast Pennsylvania was always Yankees Country but now it's multiplied 10X. YUK!

The Pirates were outplayed in every way possible last night, losing to the Dodgers 6-2. Tonight it's Chad Billingsley, (15-10, 3.02) for LA and Zach Duke (5-14, 4.84) for Pittsburgh. Tonight doesn't look much better. The game is on FSN.

Bricktown Showdown

Tonight at 8pm on ESPN2, the International League champs Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees play the Pacific Coast League champs Sacramento River Cats. 1 game. 1 winner. Ian Kennedy will start for the Yanks, and he will face the River Cats Brad Knox.

The Pirates returned to normal last night, losing 8-2 to the Dodgers. Tonight Derek Lowe, (13-11, 3.48) goes for LA and former SWB Yankee Jeff Karstens, (2-5, 4.46) goes for our Buccos. The game is on FSN Pittsburgh.

Pirates vs. Dodgers Tonight @ 7

The contenders keep coming as the LA Dodgers roll into PNC Park tonight at 7:05. Hiroki Kuroda, (8-10, 3.93) goes for LA and Ross Ohlendorf, (1-2, 6.84) goes for Pittsburgh. Ohlendorf will be making his PNC Park debut. The game is being televised on FSN. Let's make it four in a row cuz I hate the Dodgers!

Other things going on in the sports world

The Brewers fired Ned Yost today replacing him with former Bucco player and Altoona manager Dale Sveum. The Brew Crew are currently tied with the Phillies for the Wild Card. They also fired bench coach and former Pirates GM Ted Simmons. And yes, I do have a Dale Sveum bobblehead.

The Eagles take on The Cowboys tonight on MNF. Any chance both can lose? That would be great.

Penn State moves up one spot to #16

Carlos Zambrano pitches a no-hitter last night against Houston, in Milwaukee (HUH?)Yes, I know there was a hurricane, but Milwaukee? There are more Cubs fans in that city than Brewers fans. (kind of like Pittsburgh with all those Yankee fans)

and finally... Who else thought last nights episode on Entourage sucked? This show is getting stale. The writers need to shake it up a little. Vince doesn't want to do a movie. C'mon that was seasons 1,2,and 3.

Weekend Recap

Penn State cruises again, this time crushing the Orange 55-13. Daryll Clark and Pat Devlin both played great, as did tailback Evan Royster, who is quickly looking like one of the best backs in the country. Next week may be PSU's biggest test so far as Temple comes to town. Yes, Temple. Don't laugh. The Owls are better than the three teams the Lions beat up on so far.

The Pirates are on the verge of sweeping the Cardinals. After being swept by playoff contenders Milwaukee (twice), and the Cubs, the Bucs are giving La Russa and the Cards the finger. Sweet!
As I'm typing this, the Bucs lead 7-2 in the top of the 8th. There, I just jinxed them. I was listening to the game for a while and those bozos' Greg Brown and Steve Blass actually think Nate McLouth has a chance at the NL MVP. Yes, he is having a great year, but NL MVP? These two are a joke.

Pearl Jam wins the 1st ever This Is Getting Old poll question. Who else is reading this because I only voted once?

The Scrankees won the International League title, beating the Durham Bulls 3 games to 1. Game 4 was a 20-2 blowout that brought the city of Scranton their first professional baseball title since 1951. At least the NY Yankees won't be winning anything this year!!!

***UPDATE*** Pirates win 7-2. "Pirates win! Theeeeeee Pirates win!"

That's all folks... There is a Cookie Puss waiting for me to devourer

My Old Favorite Song This Week

Let's all take a moment and remember those who were killed in the 2001 terror attacks.

Normally, I would be posting a much newer song than this, but with today being September 11th, this just seemed right. Here is America from Razorlght

Smoke 'em If You Got 'em... But Just Do It At Home

Today is the last day for Pennsylvania smokers to light up in most public places. Tomorrow, the Pennsylvania Clean Indoor Air Act, aka "The Smoking Ban", begins. You would think Super Gov Ed Rendell could have picked a better date to start it on. Then again, he is an Eagles fan. That's all I got on this, I have to go empty my ashtray. Maybe our next President could reverse this

Pirates Vs. Astros Tonight @ 8. Let The Torture Continue (or watch something MUCH better, like 90210, or Mitch Hedberg)

Ok, as long as we have beer, I guess it's not that bad to watch the Buccos. Has anyone else noticed that Houston is making a Colorado like run? But, my friends, there is a much better way to spend your rainy Tuesday night. THE NEW 90210!

Annie (Shenae Grimes) is so freakin hot I'm glued to this show. Hot girls + bad acting + bad plots = AWESOME GOOD TIME

In case you missed it, a great post on why Pittsburgh IS good at baseball(PSAMP)

And finally... Mitch Hedberg's new CD Do You Believe In Gosh? came out today. Hedberg was a genius and left us way to soon. This clip is from Shorties Watchin' Shorties

Game Time

Tonight, our Pirates travel to Houston to take on the Astros. Ian Snell (6-10, 5.59 ERA) goes for the Bucs while Alberto Arias (0-0, 2.63 ERA) makes a spot start for the Astros. FSN will actually televise the game.

It is also the start of Monday Night Football. The Minnesota Vikings play The Green Bay Packers (-2). I'll take the Pack. Then, The Denver Broncos take on The Oakland Raiders (+3). Give me the Raiders. Doubleheader MNF. It should be that way every Monday.

And finally... I hope you were like me and passed on Tom Brady in your fantasy football draft. Just think, Brett Favre and the Jets win the AFC East
