Link Dump

How about them Buccos!!! Taking 3 or 4 from the Dodgers is always nice. Too bad FSN stopped televising Pirates games. I would have liked to see it. Its on to Chicago tonight to face the hated Cubs and guess what... FSN will have the game! No shit! I'm fully recovered from a dreadful sports weekend. Other than the Pirates (go figure) the rest of the weekend was forgettable. The Pens open their season on Friday. Good thing... they didn't have the best pre-season going 1-5. The big screen will be back for the opener so we can all watch that glorious banner being raised. Finally, for the first time in a week I can get to my email. There was a problem with the server so if you sent in links and stuff sorry its taken so long to reply. On to the links...

Overrated But Inexcusable

If you asked any knowledgeable college football fan before last nights game, they would have said Penn State was overrated. If you asked a Penn State fan, they probably would have said the same thing. The Lions were ranked #5 in the nation because a lot of teams ahead of them lost. That is no excuse for the way the team self destructed. Daryll Clark was awful. He threw 3 interceptions and fumbled in his own end zone, leading to an Iowa safety. Not to take anything away from Iowa. They got down early, stuck with their game plan and deserved to win this game.

The turning point in the game was the blocked punt returned 53 yards for a touchdown in the 4th quarter. After that play, Penn State was done. In order to be considered an elite team, Penn State cannot implode the way they did, especially at home. Turnover after turnover, this was ugly. The O-line is a joke and the coaching was pathetic. There is so much more we can say about this game but I don't feel like talking about anymore.

The Pirates Played a Game Today But Did Anyone Notice?

Take a look at these incredible pictures from the Post-Gazette and the PBC Blog. In case you do care, the Bucs lost again, 4-1. Is everyone staying home until G20 is over?

ESPN College GameDay is Coming to Penn State and We are Going to Look Like a Bunch of Idiots

This Saturday ESPN's GameDay crew will be at Beaver Stadium for the Penn State vs Iowa game. They will be broadcasting live from outside the Bryce Jordan Center from 10am to noon and 5pm to 6pm. Organizers are asking everyone to wear white because it is a white-out game. They are also asking you to bring a white BLANK poster board or sign. Yes, blank. How freakin' stupid is this going to look on TV? This may be the easiest photoshop ever for PSU haters come Sunday morning.

Favorite Jersey Day... Today!

Wear your favorite Penn State jersey to the Temple game today. I think most people already do that so I'm not sure what the point is. Wear it anyway! Go Lions!

Victory Is Mine!

My good friend (and the only comment contributor on this lame site) Joe and I had a bet this baseball season. The bet was simple. Will the Pirates have a winning season? I said no and Joe was so optimistic he said yes. Well, we know how that turned out. The bet was for a 1973 Topps Roberto Clemente card. Same bet next year, Joe? We also have a bet on this years NFL season. We each picked a team that missed the playoffs last year and whoever has the better record at the end of the year wins a Mean Joe Green rookie card. He took Houston and I took Cleveland. This one I'm not so confident about. I am confident that my new Clemente card will look good on my bookcase. Wooo! I win!

Penn State 28 - Syracuse 7

Daryll Clark threw 3 more touchdowns passes as the Nittany Lions beat Syracuse 28-7. This was not an impressive game for Penn State. While Clark looks like he can be a darkhorse Heisman candidate, the O-line is bad and the running game struggled for the 2nd straight week. This must get better soon before the Big Ten schedule. Temple comes to Happy Valley next. The game is at noon and is on the Big Ten Network. Now look at some shitty pictures. Go Lions!

The Real Music Video Of The Year

This Sunday the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from New York City. When was the last time MTV showed a video? Here's their picks for video of the year: Beyoncé- "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)", Britney Spears- "Womanizer", Eminem- "We Made You", Kanye West- "Love Lockdown" and Lady Gaga- "Poker Face". Now if you never seen any of those videos (MTV hasn't either) head over to MTV.com and check them out. Now watch this video from Depeche Mode called "Wrong". How was this video not even nominated? MTV needs to stick with crappy reality shows and ditch the VMAs. I'm not saying this is the greatest song of the year but that's not what this awards show is about. Go ahead... say those other videos are better than this one. Not. Even. Close. The VMAs are becoming a joke.

A Quick Look At Syracuse

This is not the same Syracuse team we saw last year. They are much better. Greg Paulus, the former Duke point guard, is now the teams Quarterback and looked good in their first game, a 23-20 OT loss to Minnesota. He was 19-for-31 for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception. I plan on seeing him on his ass for most of the game. Junior free safety Mike Holmes had a great game against the Gophers with 8 tackles and 1 pick. Freshman defensive end Brandon Sharpe also had a solid first game with a sack and a forced fumble. Junior linebacker Ryan Gillum will miss the game with a shoulder injury. Wide receiver Mike Williams, after missing time due to academic issues, has caught a touchdown pass in 10 straight games. Syracuse is on the right track, they are not there yet but Head Coach Doug Marrone will have them there soon. I don't expect a blowout. Penn State is a 28.5 point favorite. Take the points. TIGO's prediction: Penn State 45 - Syracuse 20. For all things Orange, check out the Syracuse blog Three Idiots On Sports. You can also follow me on Twitter. I will be posting pictures throughout the game. Go Lions!

My New Favorite Song This Week

This weeks favorite song is from the band Hard Drugs. From their press release:

Hard Drugs is an indie rock opera that trusts in spectacular songs rather than an elaborate stage production to tell a twisted love story that could only happen in Terminal City. The final product- a 13-song double LP by Jeffry Lee and executed with help from a cache of his talented friends- is an orchestral mix of roots, rock, punk, savvy percussion and heartbreaking harmonies.

Contributors include members of Blood Meridian, Black Mountain, Lightning Dust, Pink Mountaintops, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Limb Lifter, Bughouse 5, Bend Sinister, Fan Death, The Mohawk Lodge and Bison, among many others.

#9 Penn State Zips By Akron 31-7

First the good things. Daryll Clark threw for a career-high 353 yards and three touchdowns. Derek Moye caught six passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. Chaz Powell had seven catches for 65 yards and a TD and Graham Zug added five catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. After losing Deon Butler, Jordan Norwood and Derrick Williams I wasn't sure if the Lions had the receivers. I knew Powell was going to be good but Moye surprised me a bit, he had a great game.

Now the not so good things. The running game wasn't there today. Evan Royster ran for just 61 yards on 14 carries. The stats in tomorrows paper may look like they had a decent day running the ball but 37 yards was from a fake punt run from Andrew Dailey. They will have to get better running the ball to have the same success as last year. Akron is no powerhouse (funny how I used a picture of Royster after I ripped on the running game). Also outside linebacker Navorro Bowman appears to be hurt. This will be a wait and see because we all know how Penn State is at disclosing injuries. Bowman left the game in the first period and did not return.

Overall the Nittany Lions looked impressive in the first half and that was enough to crush Akron 31-7. Its hard to tell how a season is going to go after one game anyway.

Around the Big 10
#6 Ohio State survived a scare from Navy 31-27

#22 Iowa beat Northern Iowa 17-16 in a bizarre ending. The Hawkeyes blocked the potential game winning Field Goal not once, but twice in the final seconds. Strange.

Northwestern pounded Towson 47-14

Michigan State smoked Montana State 44-3

Minnesota beat Syracuse 23-20 in overtime. Syracuse is next weeks opponent.

Purdue wins over Toledo 52-31

Michigan is up big and Illinois is getting hammered by Missouri. I'll give Illinois credit for playing an actual team in week one. Wisconsin plays tonight.

Game 134- Cards @ Pirates Liveblog

9 losses in a row. Make it stop! Tonight's game is not televised in the Pittsburgh market so we can't watch number 10. Oh, and the Pirates are two losses away from setting a record for consecutive losing seasons by a major U.S. professional sports team with their 17th. Join us in the liveblog. If I can find a feed for the game I will post it there. Go Bucs!

WBS Penguins Black and Gold Game is Sold Out

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have announced that the Black and Gold game against Pittsburgh has sold out. Tickets were originally set to go on sale to the public this Tuesday. Due to higher than expected demands from season ticket holders, that will no longer take place. Good thing I'm one of those season ticket holders. I already took the next day off from work because I plan on celebrating with the cup.

My New Favorite Song This Week

People who know me know that I may be the biggest Pearl Jam fan in the world. The people who only know me from the internets may also know that. My avatar for mostly everything I do online is the Pearl Jame dude. Mark down September 20th on your calender. That is the day BACKSPACER, the new Pearl Jam album is released. This is their first single (and first video in a long time) The Fixer. Sounds like PJ is returning to early 1990s form. One more reason PJ is the greatest band ever, they actually let you embed their video!

Game 131- Pirates @ Reds Liveblog

After the Bucs took 2 of 3 against the Phillies I got optimistic. Then in true Pirates fashion, they got swept my Milwaukee (I hate that team) and lost both games of a doubleheader yesterday against the Reds in front of 15 people. Seriously, there was no one at those games, especially game 1. I have never seen a stadium that empty. PNC gets some small crowds but the Reds get even smaller ones. Tonight Pittsburgh tries to snap yet another losing streak. The game is on FSN (don't get used to it, the FSN Pirates schedule is thin in September). Go Bucs!

Neil Walker Called Up to Pittsburgh

Hometown kid Neil Walker, along with Virgil Vasquez, are the first two September call-ups for the Pirates. Walker was hitting .264 with 14 HR and 69 RBI in 95 games for AAA Indianapolis this season. Vasquez made 7 starts for Pittsburgh this year going 2-5 with a 6.09 ERA. He pitched much better in Indy and will likely be used out of the bullpen besides for the occasional spot start.
