Today the Pirates traded for RHP Sean Gallagher, of the San Diego Padres. He was recently DFA'd by the Padres and the Pirates traded cash for him. He has struggled mightily in the majors and lately has been pitching out of the bullpen.
Gives up a lot of hits and his SO/BB is a pretty sad 1.42 for his major league career.
He has had success in the minors though and was even rated as BA's #82 prospect prior to the 2008 season. He has spent all of his AAA time in the PCL where he did put up an impressive 6-6 record with a 3.08 ERA in 22 starts. The PCL is generally thought of as an extreme hitters league so those numbers are very promising. He is only 24 too so he is still young enough that he can get it.
He is the basic control issue Pirate acquisition. He has decent enough stuff that he could be very good IF he figures it out.
Considering we only traded cash for him there is really no risk in this type of move.
