Pittsburgh Pirates President, and PR nightmare, Frank Coonelly was arrested for DUI.
I really kicked around even writing about this before I realized that I did it for Hines Ward I might as well do it in this case too.
I’m not a Front Office hater or whatever wants to be said, but Coonelly’s actions are irresponsible and downright dangerous. These days it seems like many people feel like DUI is a minor charge, a slight mistake. It’s not on either hand. Mr. Coonelly is 51 years old, has a fine job, and could easily call a cab. Driving while intoxicated is 100% preventable and this incident shows a huge lack of judgement and is a mark against the character of someone who already isn’t very favorably viewed among Pirates fans.
He shouldn’t be fired, like some will inevitably call for. He should deal with the consequences just like everyone else who makes this selfish, dangerous mistake. Whether that is a weekend in jail and a revocation of his license, or ARD classes for first time offenders.
It will be interesting to see if there is a load of hypocrisy around this. I blasted Ward for it, I’m blasting Coonelly for it. Ward is my favorite Steeler, I go back and forth on Coonelly. Will the media give the benefit of the doubt to Coonelly like they did for Ward? I somehow doubt it.
Hopefully we can get some consistency from the Pittsburgh Sports media, something it has been lacking as of late.
Shining that light is the main reason for this post. If this catches fire in a few hours, and for a few days, it will be further indictment on the Newspaper guys.
