Yuck, huh? What a crappy night for Pittsburgh Sports.
The Pirates need to start hitting. I know it’s obvious but that’s all their is too it.
Neil Walker has just 1 hit in 13 at bats. Unacceptable.
Jose Tabata has 3 hits in 18 at bats, slightly better but still unacceptable.
Andrew McCutchen has 5 hits in 15 at bats, a good number. He has also GIDP three times. Unacceptable.
The good thing is that those guys have all hit much better than that before, it has to turn around. Doesn’t it?

Chris Capuano, LHP (33)
What a drop off for this rotation. I don’t want to say Capuano is bad, because that’s not the case. Well maybe it is sort of the case? Either way, the top two of this rotation are significantly better than 3-5. I guess that’s how it’s supposed to be though when you have a true ace.
Capuano has had a bit of an up and down career spending some time in the rotation, then some time in the bullpen. He has been very good at times, winning 18 games in 2005.

Having played for the Brewers for the majority of his career, Capuano, has faced the Bucs a good bit. In fact his 17 appearances against the Pirates are more than he has faced any other team.
The Bucs have tended to hit him pretty well too.

Despite the fact that he is a lefty, I think you have to go with Pedro Alvarez in this one. It can’t be a strict platoon if he is to learn and Capuano isn’t Cliff Lee.

Jeff Karstens, RHP (29)
Karstens picked up right where he left off last year in his first outing, giving up just one run on five hits in six innings. You’d like to see him do a little better than two K to one walk, but it’s just one game. I would honestly take that outing any day of the week.
One thing Karstens will have going for him is pitching in Dodger Stadium. Karstens is a fly-ball guy, and it is a pitcher’s park.
Karstens only faced the Dodgers once last year, and it was kind of an odd outing. He didn’t really limit the Dodgers in regards to hits, as seen below.

Seven hits in 5.2 innings is nothing to be proud of…. still he kept them from scoring, which in the end is all that matters.

Not good enough for the win, although the Pirates would go on to win the game, 4-1. Jose Veras would pick up that win.
I mentioned earlier that Karstens should pitch well at Dodger Stadium, but he hasn’t. The sample size is too small to really make any judgement but it bears stating that he has been awful in his two appearances there.

I still think it’s kind of hard to get a read of Karstens. He isn’t the same pitcher he was, and it’s basically impossible to state why. He has been a bit of a mixed bag against the Dodgers hitters, so that makes it all the harder to predict what will happen.
