Finally, it seems people are jumping on the bandwagon. Charlie at Bucsdugout, whom I think is one of the best Pirates bloggers just put out the first of the mainstream Pirates blogger articles calling for Jake Fox.
As most of you know I apparently have some sort of subconscious love for Minor League catchers. I was an Erik Kratz devotee, and I was probably the first person to say that Jake Fox should be this team’s starting catcher.
And yes I do mean to pat myself on the back with that.
When did I claim that Fox was possibly the best option?
Fox also isn’t a great defensive catcher, but he is passable, like McKenry. Fox has a pretty good bat though, better than Fort’s. In fact he has an OPS of .750 in two of his three big league seasons with 20 or more at bats.
He has shown some minor league power too, hitting 12 homers in 68 games last season at AAA and 17 in 45 AAA games in 2009. He has a career .882 OPS in the minors, though much of that came in the hitter’s PCL. Still numbers like that are something this team could use, and he has hit at least reasonably well in the majors so I like the signing. Very underrated.
I think Fox has the potential to be better than Barajas.
Fox has put up a line of .381/.458/.619 in AAA. He is hitting very well over his smallish sample size.
I know people will scream about his defense, but who cares? Rod Barajas and his ridiculous -.7 WAR are completely killing this team and guys are stealing successfully against him at a 87% clip. That’s right. Barajas is doing NOTHING good. NOT ONE THING. So the Pirates have a possible, if not probable, upgrade at the plate, but some people don’t want him up because he is playing bad defense, just like Barajas?
