Unfortunately, Rod only completed 2 games this week. One was great, the other not so much. Monday’s 1st-inning injury cut Rod’s week short.
Last Friday, June 22, Rod was 2-3 with a run scored. He followed Pedro Alvarez’s leadoff single with a single of his own to center field, and then AJ Burnett came up. Burnett bunted toward the pitcher, as expected, and Tigers pitcher Doug Fister scooped up the ball and threw it toward 3rd base – and over the 3rd baseman’s head into left field. Pedro quickly came around to score. Left fielder Delmon Young wasn’t expecting the ball to come to him, obviously, and had some trouble finding it. Rod came around to score as well and impressed Pirates fans with another all-out headfirst slide. Rod added another single in the 4th inning, an opposite field hit on the first pitch of the at-bat. Unfortunately, a Clint Barmes double play ended the inning. Overall, Rod was 2-3. The Pirates won 4-1.
Saturday, Rod was 0-3. His best at-bat was in the 3rd inning, where he fought through a 10-pitch at-bat before flying out to center field. His other 2 at-bats resulted in popups to the shortstop. Once again, the Pirates won 4-1.
Rod started Monday’s game in Philadelphia, but in the bottom of the 1st, Jimmy Rollins slid into Rod’s extended leg, jamming his knee. A big thank you to everyone on twitter for letting me know what was going on, since I wasn’t home at the time. Rod finished the inning and then left the game. Thankfully, the injury was just a bruised bone in his left knee, and all X-rays came back negative. Rod hasn’t played since is back in the lineup tonight!
Overall this week, Rod was 2-6 (.333) with a run scored.
