Rod Barajas’ week was once again shortened due to his left knee bone bruise. Rod was listed in the lineup 4 times, but he was scratched about an hour before game time on both Monday and Thursday. He did manage to start Friday and Tuesday to catch Kevin Correia and AJ Burnett, respectively.
On Friday, Rod was still adjusting to being back in the lineup and was the only Pirate to play the whole game and not get a hit. However, 2 of his outs were long fly balls to left and center field that happened to be caught. Although Kevin Correia didn’t have a great start, I’d like to think Rod boosted his confidence a little bit with his veteran presence. You can read the recap of that game here.
Tuesday’s game brought us the pitcher-catcher battery we all love so much: AJ Burnett and Rod Barajas. Rod was 1-4 with a single in the 4th inning but was left on base. The hit was a ground ball to left field that made it through. He had another flyout to left as well. That game’s recap, complete with a Drew Sutton walkoff homerun, can be found here (It also may be the best recap I’ll ever write).
In the 2 games, Rod was 1 for 9 with 2 strikeouts, giving him a .111 average for the week.
After the July 2 game from which Rod was scratched, Clint Hurdle said Rod’s knee didn’t feel too great when he woke up in the morning so it was best not to play. “He could have pushed through it if he had to. He didn’t have to right now.” After being scratched from last night’s game, Rod was icing his knee following the game. He said it was “just sore.”
Next week’s All-Star break should give Rod a bit more time to rest up (and see his family!) and hopefully show up in Milwaukee next Friday as good as new.
