Eric Fryer has actually already been removed from the roster. In fact, Fryer has already signed on with the Minnesota Twins, so he will not be back.
This is really no great loss, as his status as a prospect was pretty weak to begin with, and overall very short-lived.
The Pirates acquired Fryer for disgruntled outfielder Eric Hinske from the New York Yankees.
Fryer showed some promise at the lower levels for the Pirates, but really struggled at AAA and never got much time with the big club when he was up due to injuries.

As a member of the 40 man roster Fryer was wasting space. While he still has some slight potential, it’s very slight. Fryer would be buried at AAA by players with more upside in Tony Sanchez and Ramon Cabrera so there would be almost no time for him behind the plate at AAA. With the signing of Russell Martin there was no room for him on the big club.
