What do we actually call Bryan Morris? The Saving Grace? The Trade Saver? The Book on the Jason Bay trade? I don’t know, he’s been called a lot. Starter, reliever, closer candidate, failed prospect, shut down arm.
This trade is often maligned as one of Neal Huntington’s big failures, something that is probably accurate. Jason Bay was the biggest piece Neal Huntington has ever been in a position to trade and he failed miserably.
But that’s over. Fans do themselves a disservice when they look at Bryan Morris through that lens. He was a piece, and while he might not be the piece you want for Jason Bay, he didn’t choose that fate. He’s here, he has upside and that’s the best way to evaluate Bryan Morris going forward.
Morris was never a guy that didn’t have some expectations. He is a former first round pick that was a third round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays before that. Many teams have seen something in his arm.
He throws his fastball in the 93-94 mph range with decent groundball numbers. Morris had good numbers at AAA last season, and has put together three pretty decent years in a row, one of which was as a starter.
|A (1 season)||A||2||6||3.47||20||20||96.0||43||83||1.396||8.5||0.7||4.0||7.8||1.93|
|AA (2 seasons)||AA||9||8||3.83||54||22||167.0||64||148||1.335||8.6||0.6||3.4||8.0||2.31|
|A+ (2 seasons)||A+||7||9||3.68||23||23||117.1||41||72||1.406||9.5||0.2||3.1||5.5||1.76|
|Rk (1 season)||Rk||4||5||5.13||14||14||59.2||40||79||1.743||9.7||0.5||6.0||11.9||1.98|

He has typically kept the ball in the yard and strikes guys out at a pretty nice clip. The obvious problem is his control which did improve last season at AAA. His control numbers, combined with his SO numbers last year, would put him in a very good category as far as relievers go, and closer material is a pretty accurate description in my opinion.
Morris almost has to make this team. He is clearly better positioned than anyone else because he has zero options left and it would appear he is a better option than many other teams currently have in their bullpens. Cutting Bryan Morris would be a HUGE mistake as he would likely be acquired by another team.
Morris makes this team.
