Let’s get one thing straight. Travis Snider‘s nickname is Lunchbox. There is absolutely no way that a guy with the nickname “Lunchbox” can be held off this team.
That is easily the best nickname on the club. The only thing better than his nickname is his twitter handle – @LunchboxHero45.
If you’re interested in things like food. Then you’ll love his account. In fact, I’m not sure he tweets about anything but food.
The man just loves to eat. That’s something I can completely get behind.
Generally I usually have the first word in TiGO land when it comes to trades, but Melissa actually beat me to this one. She liked the trade. She was short, succinct, and nice about all players involved. Mellie liked Brad Lincoln if I recall correctly, but she saw the value in this trade. A reasonable person to be sure.
I also liked this trade. I, on the other hand, am not a reasonable person. When I finally got around to posting about this deal I called the current climate in the Pirates community “Yinzer meltdown”. You can read my strongly worded post here.
Now. Much of that was directed at Paul Alexander. A universally regarded dolt. If you ever see Paul Alexander at the bar you’d best either leave while he’s in the bathroom or wait until he’s looooooong gone.
Reading that article I will back off a bit on my claim that Huntington knows bullpens beyond a shadow of a doubt, he gave us Hisanori Takahashi and Chad Qualls for example, but overall I think he does a good job.
Now we all know how well Lincoln pitched after the trade, not at all, so maybe. Just maybe. We’ll give Travis Snider a chance?
And that’s what worries me about Snider. Will he get a fair chance from the fans and media in this city? Who knows. Is it important that he does? I think it is.
The guy is basically a Yinzer anyway. He loves to eat. Just like all you Yinzers do. That’s pretty high on your list of hobbies. On top of that the guy plays hard. Hustle. I don’t know how he grades out on the “Yinzer-Cena” scale in regards to Loyalty and Respect, but Hustle is undeniable. He would probably give Yadier Molina a five knuckle shuffle if it meant the Pirates got a run out of it. He’s also apparently a great teammate. Great in the locker room.’
Travis Snider is pretty much the living, breathing, baseball embodiment of the legendary “Steeler Way”. Love him.
Snider was not great for the Pirates last year. He was injured, inconsistent, and just kind of “meh”, to use a patented blogger word, overall. Despite all of that, including moving to a different country without basically any notice, he managed to give the Pirates 0.3 WAR. I know, I know, nothing to rave about. It was tied for 8th on the team amongst batters. Somewhat surprising considering he only played in 50 games. That’s higher than Jose Tabata, Josh Harrison, and Alex Presley. And each of them played in almost twice as many games as Snider.
So let’s cool it on how “bad” Snider was last year.
I hate to say it but Travis Snider might end up being half of a platoon himself. It very well could be Garrett Jones and Gaby Sanchez holding down first base with Jose Tabata playing against righties.
I kind of hate platoons. I’ve made that known. If you have two guys that means you don’t have one. That said you have to play the hand you’re dealt and that might be the optimal way to use the at bats.
Snider is 25, he needs to show something. He has the most upside to do so though.
That’s why I think Snider absolutely is a lock to make this team.
That and the fact he has no options remaining. Pirates aren’t going to cut him before trying everything else.
A Starling Marte – Andrew McCutchen – Travis Snider outfield has a ton of potential. It’s a high risk/ high reward scenario honestly. They could easily be one of the better outfields in the league or one of the worst.
