With last night’s brawl between the Dodgers and Padres resulting in a major injury for Zack Greinke I got to wondering why fights occur in Baseball?
Now a $147 million dollar investment is on the shelf. Is there really any excuse at all for charging the mound?
Baseball isn’t like hockey. Hockey has two willing combatants going one on one after generally agreeing to fight.
Baseball? No. The participants might not be willing and when the benches clear literally anything can happen. There is no more ridiculous sight in sports than watching the players run in from the bullpen to join the melee on at the mound.
Carlos Quentin should immediately be suspended for his actions. Furthermore the MLB should make a rule, just like the NHL and NBA which states that any player who leaves the bench during a brawl should also be suspended.
I’m all for sending a message and having the players police themselves. Guy gets hit. Opponent gets hit. Umpire warns the benches, message sent. There is no excuse at all for what happened last night though.
