Currently Clint Barmes is hitting .111/.143/.185. Our other shortstop is a guy named John McDonald. McDonald is basically a defensive replacement. He has just six plate appearances. John McDonald is hitting. 000. He’s always been pretty inept offensively. Like I said, defensive replacement.
Mr. McDonald is a defensive replacement on a team that struggles to score runs. A luxury the Pirates really can’t afford. On top of that he will make $1.5 million dollars this season. An amount that would be better spent anywhere else.
Anywhere. I’m talking upgrading hot dog rollers at PNC Park, improving dental benefits for ushers, having a free ticket Tuesday for long suffering fans. Seriously anything. Manhole covers? You name it.
On top of that we’ve seen that Clint Barmes is hitting the weight of a teenage girl.
It’s a shame that we don’t have anyone hitting the cover off the ball in the high minors. Maybe a Triple A shortstop who could back up Barmes, since he has to start, and maybe, just maybe, share time with him.
Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a guy hitting say……. .310/.400/.483? Imagine if this guy could even play decent defense! A guy able to play every infield position! A young guy though. Someone who would make next to nothing in terms of major league salary.
What a team could do with such a player! A player with potential to upgrade a black hole in the lineup! A player currently on a decent hot streak!
Brandon Inge? Nahhhhh he’s hitting .115/.303/.269 at AAA Indianapolis. He’ll be getting called up in the next few days, taking a spot from someone who might potentially be able to contribute to the team.
I’m talking about Jordy Mercer. He does fit the numbers above. He is young. He has upside. He plays good defense. And he’s a whooooooole lot better than Brandon Inge, a player that only brings being old and washed up to the table.
