We are going to lose a Jonathan Sanchez start? Nooooooooo!
Wow. There isn’t much in the world that sums up the 1980s quite like that.
Last night’s game will be rescheduled and it will start over. Sorry Pedro Alvarez, no hit for you.
Imagine how different life would be if A.J. Burnett would have signed with the Cardinals in 2008. Maybe he doesn’t falter in New York. Maybe he never becomes a Pittsburgh Pirate. Either way, let’s just be glad he didn’t become a Cardinal. He probably would have destroyed the Pirates and we’d all hate him if he did.
Pirates fans owe a massive debt of gratitude for the way he has made it cool to be a Pirate.
I’m a bit worried about A.J.
The strikeouts are great I guess but he needs more quick innings. He needs to keep the pitch count down. The bullpen is getting taxed and the Pirates can’t afford their “ace” only going six full once every three games.
Last year a Burnett game was almost an automatic win, this year the Pirates have only won 2 of his 3 starts. He has gotten a win in none of them.
Not that I care about his record greatly, it’s the lack of innings and pitch count that are killing the bullpen.
Just keep in mind, the Pirates won 19 of his 31 starts last year. If that changes at all it doesn’t bode well for the Pirates due to their questionable rotation.
St. Louis was kind of his achilles heel last year, easily the team he struggled with the most.
The crazy part about how bad those numbers are is that his Pirates debut was against the Cardinals. We all remember that game!
Now look how bad those other two games were!
Both ends of the scale for certain!!!!
I’m just going to hope we get debut A.J. and not destroyed A.J.. It’s time for a really good outing. Go grab one against the hated Cardinals.
The good with the bad. The good yesterday was that a Jonathan Sanchez start got rained out before the bullpen had to start working in the third inning. The bad is that it looked as if the Pirates were on to Jake Westbrook. Now they gotta beat Shelby Miller or risk getting swept in the shortened series.
Between this year and last year Miller has only thrown 26 innings, making only three starts. His last start was a phenomenal one against the awful Brewers.
So far the Cardinals have won have every game he’s started.
He has never faced our beloved Bucs.
So what’s there to know about Miller? Well he was the #19 pick in the 2009 MLB draft. You know, the year the Pirates drafted Tony Sanchez instead of Miller, Mike Minor, Drew Storen, Aaron Crow, Mike Trout, and Jacob Turner.
Shelby Miller’s Baseball America rankings:
2010 – 50
2011 – 13
2012 – 8
2013 – 6
Yeah, he’s a pretty good prospect. Already in the rotation at 22 years old.
Miller is a very real Rookie of the Year candidate, especially winning a spot so early.
He has good stuff (touching 94 or 95 on the fastball), a dominating curve (when he’s commanding it), and a really good, deceptive changeup that compliments his fastball very well.
Ace potential, will frustrate the Pirates for years to come. Unless of course Tony Sanchez can come up and figure him out.
First Pitch: 7:05 PM EST
