Can Jack Edwards please call this game? Steve Ott and Matt Cooke on the ice at the same time. Edwards would be so confused seeing two versions of Sirhan Sirhan on the ice. It would terrify him. I’d say that it would cause him to lose his mind if that was something that hadn’t already happened. Even Sirhan thinks it’s hilarious.
The Sabres are pretty awful. They have been eliminated the playoffs and are playing for pretty much nothing but pride and a paycheck at this point. That being said, they have given the Pens problems more than most of the other teams in the Northeast Division. Monday night’s win against the Senators gave the Pens season sweeps against them, the Bruins, and the Canadiens. Meanwhile, the Sabres are dead last in the division, yet they were the ones responsible for ending Pittsburgh’s 15 game win streak back on April 2.
It is fair to expect another gutted Penguins lineup but it is not fair to expect that the level of play will decrease. Every game, someone new is kept out of the lineup for some reason and it never seems to matter. Literally half of the top two lines are out of the lineup. The entire first power play unit is out of the lineup. The Penguins have nothing to play for outside of I guess a chance at the Presidents Trophy. And with all that said, they keep pushing on and are currently on a seven game winning streak.
On the other end of the rink will be the Sabres who have ruined opportunities at playing a spoiler role in their past two games by taking losses to the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets. They sit at the bottom of the Northeast with just 44 points (1 more point than the Philadelphia Flyers). They are in the bottom third of the eastern conference in goals scored and goals allowed.
The best news for the Sabres is that Sidney Crosby isn’t playing. I take that back. The best news for Ryan Miller is that Crosby isn’t playing. Miller has nightmares about Crosby.
The Presidents Trophy would be cool. Although I don’t think it’s extremely realistic at this point. The Chicago Blackhawks have three more points than the Pens with a game in hand. Going into the playoffs on another long win streak with the makeshift lineup that they are running out there each and every night would be more impressive in my opinion. Going on two 10+ game winning streaks in one season, especially a shortened season, with any lineup combination is impressive.
