Penn State has announced that sophomore quarterback Steven Bench will transfer from Penn State. Bench had been in a competition with JUCO transfer Tyler Ferguson for the starting quarterback job.
I think it’s safe to say this is some surprising news, but it really shouldn’t be. Clearly, Ferguson had the upper-hand on the starting job, and Bench isn’t an idiot. He knows freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg is on the way.
Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien said this about Bench’s transfer:
“I have been meeting with all the players this week with my evaluation of where they are at related to football and academics and to discuss what they need to work on this summer. After meeting with Steven, he informed me he wants to play elsewhere. We want what is best for Steven. I want to thank him for his contributions to the program. We wish Steven the best in the future and will assist him anyway we can.”
Bench saw very limited playing time last season behind senior quarterback Matt McGloin, finishing his Penn State career with 12 yards, completing just 2 of his 8 passing attempts.
Thanks to you, Steven Bench, for sticking with Penn State at least through the first year of the tough times. It’s nice to know he likely isn’t leaving because of the sanctions, he just wants a chance to play.
And to you, Penn State fans, don’t rip on the guy. He’s a 19 or 20 year old kid, probably the same age as me, actually. Let’s not be one of those fan-bases people talk about for ripping on kids for not choosing their school/transferring.
