We don’t talk politics too much here. And by too much I mean never. This one was too good to pass up for me.
It was recently reported that Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, was in talks to finalize a partnership with the NFL to help promote the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.
The NFL has a long history of legally bribing public officials. In 2012 the NFL spent $1.140 million on lobbying efforts. What would the league have to lobby for? Well first is the continuation of it’s anti-trust waiver, second was the NFL vs. American Needle case (which they lost in the Supreme Court), but now there is something else the NFL wants to protect.
It’s their status as a non-profit organization. The NFL, a $10 billion dollar a year business, is non-profit. This status has recently come under fire by Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma.
So basically what you’re seeing is a type of Quid Pro Quo, in my opinion. The NFL, in addition to their lobbying efforts are entering into a partnership with the Government in hopes that this, in addition to the millions of dollars spent on lobbying, will spare their precious tax exempt status.
You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.
