Jeff Locke picked up his ninth win yesterday against the Reds. His ERA sits at 2.11. He made his first All Star appearance. None of which matters to Reds hack announcer Thom Brennaman who thinks Jeff Locke “sucks”.
Now to be fair to Thom it’s hard to see who is good and who sucks when you are a no talent piece of shit, ass-kisser like he is. It’s hard to see anything outside of Cincy with those red glasses on. If you had the misfortune of watching the game on Fox you know exactly how much of a deluded, no skill, asshole Thom is. If you haven’t heard him before you should be able to tell what kind of person he is just by the fact that he spells his name with an H.
Is the above an overreaction? Probably. This is the guy that ends up calling Pirate games for Fox though. Someone who is clearly biased and clearly dislikes the Pirates. But screw him honestly, he isn’t worth any more time.
The Nationals have actually been worse than the Pirates since the break, getting crushed yesterday for the sweep by the Dodgers.
This series might even end up being more important in the long run than that Reds series was depending on how the two teams finish up the season. The Nationals are seven games back from a Wildcard spot. A very disappointing season for them. A series win or god forbid a sweep here could really put them in a massive hole and turn them from borderline buyers, into likely sellers. That’s good in two pretty obvious ways. 1. If they aren’t buyers the market is just better for the Bucs. 2. If they actually become sellers there will be a few more players available. So the Bucs could really help themselves in more way than one today.
Andrew McCutchen is getting hot at just the right time for this series. Cutch feasts on the Washington Nationals.
That’s quite a sample size too. Nothing to discount.
He’s also a huge fan of Nationals Park as you’d probably gleaned from those numbers.
Charlie Morton is coming off his best start of the season.
He was written off after what seemed like a few innings of his first start but he’s actually pitched quite well considering the circumstances.
Charlie is actually a team leader in one regard. He leads the team in unearned runs. He’s gotten little help defensively. Part of that is just bonehead defense, part of that is the fact that he leans on his defense so heavily. There are just going to be more opportunities for errors when you are an extreme groundball guy.
Still it obviously hurts and it’s something that will have to shape up if Morton is going to be successful. It’s weird to think that his spot relies heavily on the performance of position players but it’s true.
His biggest bugaboo is still lefthanded hitters but he’s improved quite drastically in that regard.
Compare that to his career numbers to see just how much better it’s been this season.
Note that those career numbers are even better due to this year’s numbers.
Morton has faced the Nationals one time in 2009, 2010, 2011 and his only good outing was in 2011 when he gave up one run over 5.2 IP. He has never beaten the Nats.
So stacking lefties shouldn’t be too big a problem for the improved Charlie Morton.
He’ll face off against the extremely disappoint Dan Haren. I think Pirate fans were interested in Haren but I don’t really remember. All I know is I’m glad he doesn’t pitch for the Pirates at this point.
The dude can not keep the ball in the park. He leads the league in homers allowed and, combined with giving up a ton of hits, that’s why his numbers are so poor.
Dan will be making his first start of the season against the Pirates.
How bad has it been? The Nationals have lost their last ten games when Dan Haren starts. The Nationals are 4-13 when Haren pitches!
We talked about Cutch earlier, well Mr. Haren has been putrid against righties this year. The stars seem to be aligning quite well for Mr. McCutchen.
Add in the fact that he has been an unmitigated disaster at home and I think you have a matchup that favors the Bucs.
He’s basically been a career quality starter against the Pirates.
First Pitch: 7:05 PM EST
