A sweep of the Marlins is just what the doctor ordered. When combined with the Dodgers taking the series from the Cardinals the Pirates have built themselves up a nice little lead. No time to step off the gas though the Cardinals play the Cubs, they should have no problem dispatching them with extreme prejudice.
The Cubs and the Rockies are free falling in very similar ways. In their last ten they are 2-8 and 1-9 respectively. So opening up a greater lead is pretty unlikely. This series is about preservation. Any extension would be icing on the cake.
The Pirates just missed another complete pitching match-up rematch. Only one of these three games will feature a different matchup than last time.
Some numbers at Coors Field.
So yeah. Some success there.
How insane is it that this guy has gotten a decision in every outing? Old school style!
That’s important though. That’s why you can mention him in the Cy Young race despite missing a decent amount of time. Like it or not wins matter for that award. If his numbers continue to be good enough to win it though he will likely pile up some more wins, possibly enough for consideration.
Liriano just makes lefties look silly.
He has “struggled” on the road this season.
I guess struggled is pushing it, eh?
This will be just his third career start against the Rockies, and his first trip to Coors.
Coors shouldn’t hurt Liriano too much. He’s been keeping the ball on the ground and very rarely allowing homers. You gotta love this matchup.
This is a……
Jorge De La Rosa probably has something to prove in this one. The Pirates forced his shortest outing of the season, getting his pitch count up to 91 pitches in just 4.0 innings.
That was Jorge’s second straight non-quality start and his fourth in his last six games.
He’s gotten off to a pretty rocky start in the second half, no pun intended.
The good news for him is that Garrett Jones’s astronomical numbers can be offset by his proficiency against lefties.
De La Rosa is another guy that struggles as he pitches.
Jorge is not a groundball pitcher the likes of Liriano.
He has managed to keep the ball in the park though.
His numbers against the Bucs aren’t so good.
Let’s just hope Andrew McCutchen is able to play today.
