After an embarrassing road trip the Pirates are coming home.
Seriously. The schedule is starting to get short. The Pirates really need to get their shit together or they’re going to find themselves in a one game playoff for their first playoff birth since 1992. Not something any Pirates fan should really want to see.
The Pirates are 8.5 games ahead of the Diamondbacks for that last spot. They’d really have to tumble pretty spectacularly to not get it. Still, this series is pretty freaking important just because they potentially could stumble.
Stomp on the Diamondbacks you pussies.
First up is Gerrit Cole. Cole seems like he is more comfortable throwing his other pitches. The results just haven’t been so great recently.
Some of the hype has died down on Cole, which is fine. This isn’t the year he establishes himself as the Ace and that’s fine, this experience is valuable moving forward and frankly, you could do worse in a fourth starter. I still say if Wandy Rodriguez manages to pitch again this season he takes Cole’s spot, not Charlie Morton‘s.
The majority of his starts have come at home, where he’s struggled.
That is largely due to his small sample size at PNC.
His first inning woes also continue to be a source of disdain. He’s just toxic in the first inning.
Cole has never faced the Diamondbacks or any of their hitters.
Lots of people lapped up that speculation. I think the Buccos did alright though not signing him, he’s been pretty bad for the Diamondbacks in an injury filled season.
I’ll never forget when McCarthy was hit in the head with a line drive. It’s literally sickening to watch.
Don’t watch that if you don’t want to feel bad.
McCarthy will make just his third start since May 30th. He has been on the DL with shoulder inflammation over that span.
His first start back? Awful. His second start back? Good.
The Pirates took him to pound town the first time they faced him this season, which was only the second time they’ve done such a thing.
The first time they faced him was in an inning of scoreless relief all way back in 2006.
McCarthy has kind of been getting trounced by guys on either side of the plate, though righties have hit him a bit harder. Hopefully that doesn’t mean Clint Hurdle is going to start Gaby Sanchez against him today.
It’s really hard to say what the early season injury did to his numbers or how long he pitched injured. Therefore it’s hard to say what he is after the injury, especially since he’s been great and awful an equal amount since coming off.
The playoffs start now! Let’s go all the way!
First Pitch: 7:05 PM EST
