Well Rich is out sunbathing on a nude beach or something for the next week and Brad’s computer monitor died. That means I’m taking care of the preview and the recap today. A double dose of me. I know the ladies are excited.
A four game sweep is out of the question after Francisco Liriano’s rare hiccup last night. But the Pirates can still cap off a even more rare successful west coast trip by winning the series this afternoon.
A.J. Burnett (pictured above) will be on the mound for the Pirates. You sort of never know what you’re going to get out of him anymore. He had an excellent start his last time out against the Padres but the two before that were not nearly as impressive.
There is good news and bad news about Burnett taking the mound away from home. His numbers are better when he’s away from PNC Park. His ERA is nearly a run better.
The weird part is that it hasn’t translated to wins.
The Pirate bats will see an old friend in Ryan Vogelsong. This will be his fourth start since returning from the disabled list after having surgery on his hand early in the season. The first month and a half of the season prior to the injury was ugly for Vogelsong. Since returning, he has been better but far from lights out.
An interesting note on Vogelsong is that he’s handled left handed batters better than righties.
What’s even more bizarre than that is Garrett Jones actually has great career numbers against him despite that statistic. Also, Andrew McCutchen has struggled against him but I have a feeling that won’t continue much longer.
