The streak is dead. You can throw all your scenarios out there that says it’s not, but eff you. I’m going to enjoy that day greatly, until tonight when the Pirates sweep the Brewers. Then I don’t know what I’ll do!
Tonight’s game has potential to be so emotional. So great for Pirates fans. Not only are they not losers, they can be actual winners tonight. If you don’t think that matters to the players just go ahead and look at the quotes after they get that 82nd win.
Think of how cool it will be for Neil Walker in particular.
Granted, we don’t need a stopper tonight.
The Pirates have a very real opportunity to not only win the division, make a deep playoff run, they also could potentially have a Cy Young winner in Liriano and an MVP in Andrew McCutchen. This is the type of thing that builds a young fanbase!
Speaking of Cutch, how awesome is it that the team’s savior hit his 100th homer in this game? I want Cutch to have a Pirates bust in Cooperstown.
How awesome was Liriano in his last outing? How awesome is it that Liriano has a decision in every game he’s pitched?
How awesome was this freaking signing by Neal Huntington? I destroyed it. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Liriano has beaten the Brewers in both of his outings against them, allowing two runs total.
There has been some hand-wringing about starting Liriano today. What people aren’t taking into account is that the more rest Liriano has gotten, the worse he’s been throughout his career.
Liriano just doesn’t do as well with extra rest. It’s true this year as well.
So you pitch him today, get the win, and pitch Jeff Locke against the Cardinals, a team that struggles against lefties.
This puts the Pirates best pitcher in a situation to pick up a win, while allowing Locke to face a team that kind of plays into his strengths. If Locke scuffles you can either piggyback Jeanmar Gomez with him or roll with our battalion of lefties to pick up multiple innings.
I like the strategy. It’s using some numbers, some probability, and playing to the strengths of the team. That’s exactly what I’d want the manager to do.
In addition Liriano is familiar with the Brewers and has had success against them.
It’s nothing to get upset about. They just need to go out there and win this one. Who knows, if the Cardinals lose to the Reds again this game could be exactly the same as him pitching against the Cardinals later on.
Every game is important.
I don’t want to say it’s going to be easy, but it’s undeniable the Pirates have the advantage tonight. Wily Peralta hasn’t been great, he hasn’t really been good. Somehow he’s managed to throw two complete games, so there is obviously potential there.
He has never faced the Bucs. That always gives me pause even though I think I know better.
Some great starts in his last five, some not great starts in his last five.
His control doesn’t impress me when compared to his SO numbers, and he gives up a lot of hits. I think the Bucs can get this guys pitch count up, get to that pen.
I just really like the Pirates chances tonight.
