I don’t think people are considering that the Pirates can still miss the playoffs. They’ve been in first or second for so long that everyone has kind of just took for granted that they had such a big lead.
With the Pirates pitching staff currently falling apart I hate to say I told you they should be looking at pitching during the deadline, but yeah. Suck it.
The problem with this team is that they can only go as far as the pitching takes them. They could have traded for Prince Fielder and the ghost of Honus Wagner at the deadline, they can’t win with their starting pitchers giving up five runs in four innings of work.
This series is going to be a massive challenge. If the Pirates starters don’t perform they will definitely lose this series.
First up is Gerrit Cole.
Cole is at least a consistent freaking pitcher.
The Pirates haven’t even won a game since the last time he pitched, win number 81.
Depending on how bad Charlie Morton‘s vagina injury is Gerrit Cole might actually be the most steady pitcher in the rotation! Consider that for a second. Cole has only given up more than three earned runs one time this season.
Yeah. For all the bitching about him not being a Rookie of the Year/ MVP/ Cy Young/ Silver Slugger/ Gold Glove/ Pro-bowler/ Conn Smythe/ Gold Medalist, he hasn’t actually been too bad in his first year.
I expect it to continue. I expect him to keep the Buccos in the game.
If he could work on pitching from the stretch I think he’d be right in that conversation.
The guy is horrible with men on and/or with RISP.
Fixable. That’s the type of problem you’d prefer. Not a lack of talent, just something he needs to work on.
The only other things you could mention about that is maybe he is tipping his pitches. I’m not so sure about that. Another possibility is his pretty clear rage. This guy is fiery, a competitor and sometimes that gets the best of him. Maybe he should start smoking pot after he takes his full amount of mandated drug tests.
I’d also start warming him up about an hour before he actually starts warming up too. The guy just stinks in the first inning.
It takes him some time to get into his groove. I also think that’s something he can improve, not a lack of any talent or tools.
Cole is on the right track. Cole is good enough to win games, and keep the Pirates in games. I expect nothing less tonight.
The problem the Pirates have is that it might not matter what Cole does. Yu Darvish is a machine.
He has one thing in common with Pirates hitters. They are both proficient in the strikeout department.
Darvish leads the league in strikeouts. The Pirates have the fifth most strikeouts in the league. This could be a match made in heaven for Darvish.
The Astros lead the league in K. Darvish has struck out 44 Astros in four games this season. Minnesota is third in K, he struck out 11 in his one game against them.
The Pirates are going to either have to have their best stuff or they are going to look foolish against a guy like Darvish. Hopefully they went over to Onnit and picked up a few bottles of Alphabrain.
If not they’ll likely end up trying to pull a bunch of unpullable crap and Pedro Alvarez will be out in front of three straight breaking balls because he has this crazy idea that guys are going to attack him with strikes in the zone.
Darvish isn’t just throwing strikes, he’s getting results. He has a 70% QS percentage and he is averaging 6.7 innings pitched per games.
RHB are just silly when facing Darvish. Absolutely silly.
Like Cole, he tends to get stronger as he throws. It’s imperative they get to him early.
Like Cole he has never faced his opponent.
