For the first time in memory I woke up this morning and was surprised to remember the Steelers were playing. How insane is that?
I got up, checked my phone and saw on Twitter that the Steelers had a game today.
I’ve never been less excited about the Steelers in my life.
When baseball playoffs were in full swing I figured that was why I couldn’t get into this team. Pennant race is over and ya know what? I care even less.
Is it the record? I don’t think so. Afterall, I’m a Pirates fan. I’ve stuck around through the duldrums, the ups and downs. The Pirates future has often been a lot bleaker than the current plight of my beloved Steelers.
Steelers should beat the Jets. Any other year we’re looking past this game. We’re talking about how bad the Steelers will shut down Santonio Holmes, how bad the Jets secondary is without Darrelle Revis, Rex Ryan’s foot-fetish, and the potential that Mark Sanchez is out with herpes.
We aren’t talking about that though. We’re currently talking about Art Rooney II using his best square-peg/round-hole logic in regards to the teams offensive philosophy. The neutering of Ben Roethlisberger.
We’re talking about Todd Haley stiffing a contractor on a million dollar home deal. We’re talking about Todd Haley stiffing a dog watcher. We’re talking about everyone on earth stiffing Todd Haley’s wife. And of course, we’re talking about Todd Haley having a stiff one at a bar in the wee hours before a game.
We’re talking about ping pong and billiards. The veteran leadership on this team is taking everything out on the rookies, while playing shuffleboard.
Mike Tomlin has finally taken the veterans gaming privileges away but what does it matter now? The High School atmosphere is already complete. The Seniors punished the Freshman.
Ryan Clark is more concerned with his television career than his football career. If he could wrap up ball-carriers like he wraps up takes on ESPN maybe the defense wouldn’t be allowing 27.5 points per game. I’m sure that’s Ben’s fault too, right Ryan?
It’s not a problem with the young guys, it’s a problem with the old ones. Ziggy Hood was drafted in 2009. Bust. Lamarr Woodley? The jury is still out. He has been better than last year but he hasn’t necessarily been an All Pro. He really went from a “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” to a “Got Rich and Stopped Tryin'”.
Obviously Mike Tomlin is a problem. Obviously the team is not prepared for games. Obviously the offense sucks. Obviously the high picks spent on the offensive line have been wasted in large part. Obviously Kevin Colbert shares in the blame. Obviously this is Tomlin’s team. Obviously Tomlin supports the offensive philosophy or he’d speak out. Obviously if he doesn’t he’s just a stooge and not worth having this job. Obviously he is not Bill Cowher. Obviously that might be a bad thing.
The Steelers can supposedly still make the playoffs I hear. It’s unlikely. This team has holes. This team has leadership problems.
What this team does have is an identity. A lot of people talk about the need to have an identity in football. Too often that only means something good. “Ground and pound”, “Greatest show on turf”, “Hardnosed defense”, etc.. Well you can have a poor identity too. The Steelers have absolutely cemented one thus far in 2013.
