No surprise here but my arch-enemy Rob Biertempfel is reporting that LHP Wandy Rodriguez has in fact exercised his 2014 option and he will be with our Pittsburgh Pirates.

The option will pay Wandy $13 million dollars in 2014 but $5.5 million will be paid by the Houston Astros.
Wandy Rodriguez is a really good option at a cost of just $7.5 million, despite hardly pitching last season.
Despite what you’d assume he pitched pretty good in his 12 starts last season and fairly decent in 2012.
Wandy has been a consistently above average pitcher for years now. Pirates fans generally don’t want him for pretty poor reasons. He was hurt last year I guess is the most obvious one. Guy has had a sub-4.00 ERA every season since 2007, and a sub 1.300 WHIP in three of the last four seasons.
If he is healthy he is a G-R-E-A-T option.
That leaves a rotation that looks like this right now.
There might be some depth next season.
And don’t forget, A.J. Burnett is potentially coming back.
With all that depth, increased season ticket sales, increased TV revenue, and playoff revenue from next year Wandy is definitely worth it, even accounting for his injury risk.
