Could this be the year? Yes. It will be the year. Pat Chambers will have his first winning season as head coach of the Penn State basketball team.
Just how good will the Nittany Lions be, though?
*Disclaimer: I am overly optimistic about Penn State hoops just about every year, so take anything and everything I say and forget it all.
First of all, Tim Frazier is back! We finally get to see him and D.J. Newbill on the court together for what will hopefully be an entire season. One could say I’m a bit excited about this, but that would be false — I’m fucking giddy about it.
Ross Travis had a great offseason and he looks poised for a breakout season. Just please Ross, stop shooting threes. Hell, the Junkyard Dog could average 35 rebounds this year, who knows. This is our year.
The Penn State backcourt is wack this season. (I think “wack” means great, and if it does, that statement is accurate). With Andre Roberts, John Johnson, Geno Thorpe and Graham Woodward all joining the roster, along with Frazier and Newbill, it is going to be very interesting to see how Chambers decided to split up the playing time. Johnson won’t be eligible until December, so until then, the Nittany Lions will have to have a deep bench — not a great bench though. Just a very good one.
The frontcourt worries me. It worries you too.
Donovan “Don’t call me Donavan” Jack is apparently going to be playing center this year. Ruh-Roh! All 6’9″, 95 lbs of him will probably struggle against other B1G bigs. Personally, I am excited as hell to see Chambers use a 4-guard offense like he and Jay Wright used at Villanova.
Penn State has two potential all big-ten guards in their starting five, so don’t blame me for being extremely pumped for this season. I have gone to all the Penn State home games since I was a young child, including trips to Madison Square Garden in the NIT. We’ve all sat through some ugly basketball. Some bad basketball players have come through Happy Valley…
Let me be excited. It’s about time we have something to legitimately be excited about, right?
My prediction: 20-12 (9-9 in B1G) NCAA tourney bid.
That is a guess for my prediction; I didn’t actually go through every game and pick a winner or anything.
Oh, and it’s never too early for this! #BeatPitt at the Pete!
No, seriously, I say Penn State wins that game. Because….why not? I guess.
