Dickerson still has some pretty legit prospect status. I personally like him. He plays first base, a position that is currently a black hole for the Bucs.
He’ll probably enjoy going to San Diego, that’s where he’s from after-all.
The return is two guys that were recently DFA just last week. Decker is a decent prospect in his own right. He has some pop, and appears to have a pretty good eye. He’s also about the same age as Dickerson but has seen time at both AAA and the MLB levels.
Prior to the 2013 season Jaff Decker was said to have the “Best Strike Zone Discipline” in a very good Padres system by Baseball America.
I bet he has a shot at making this team out of Spring Training. I also think this is a precursor to another move. Why else would we need yet another “upside” outfielder?
Mikolas has 27 big league appearances, all out of the bullpen.
Miles spent the majority of last season at AAA where he pitched okay.
Miles is a big kid, 6’5″. He has a really good curve but struggles with homers. A pretty stereotypical Huntington target. Big kid, can strike guys out, they’ll work on him getting the ball down in the zone and I wouldn’t be shocked at all if he makes the bullpen out of spring, and succeeds.
Both players have to be placed on the 40 man roster. To make room for that the Pirates have DFA Garret Jones and Kyle McPherson.
Jones really disappointed last season and lost his job to fellow disappointment Justin Morneau. This likely brings his time in Pittsburgh to a close.
He was a controversial player. Not through any fault of his own, but amongst fans. He was both loved and hated by sectors of the fanbase but in my opinion he wildly overachieved and helped this team out through some lean years. I’m glad he got to experience the playoffs as a Pirate, but I’m not upset to see him go. This team needs less platoony players. If you have two it’s because you don’t have one. I’d much rather see them work on the one, and spend the Jones money elsewhere.
Kyle McPherson only pitched two games in 2013 at AAA before going down with an elbow injury. McPherson has been injury prone. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go unclaimed. The Pirates could then outright him to AAA, which would be fine with this guy. I like Fear, but he has no business on the 40 man at this point.
