A win is a win but this is getting nuts. It works against bad teams with bad bullpens but it’s probably at least partially why the Pirates have sucked so bad in their own division.
I wonder if sweeping the Phillies broke the curse? Can the Pirates sweep teams now? Was that just a disturbance in the force?
Can he keep walking basically no one? I don’t know, but it’s been the key to his success.
It’s the difference between a mediocre WHIP and a great one. His numbers otherwise are quite similar to last year’s, the walk numbers are just so significantly down.
Locke pitched alright against the Rockies last year but holy freaking walks.
We’re ready to believe you Jeff!
One thing held true yesterday, if the Pirates have never seen a pitcher expect him to kick their ass. Hopefully that isn’t the case today.
Tyler Matzek is making just the eighth start of his rookie campaign, therefore the Pirates have never seen him.
As you can see the results haven’t necessarily been good.
He has three quality starts but he isn’t really getting smashed. There’s a better pitcher in him one would think.
Before 2010 and 2011 he was rated in the top 50 by both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus after being drafted 11th out of High School. He was pretty highly touted but, in regular prospect fashion, he didn’t quite pan out.
Obviously he still has a chance, but he wasn’t good even this season in the minors. It seems as if that Ace potential is vanishing quick, if it’s not already gone.
Just another tale of a top 100 prospect failing. The second in a row in the Rockies rotation.
